Gold loans are secured on pledged jewellery: you borrow against appraised gold without selling it. This page uses the same reducing-balance formula as our EMI calculator, with a gold-value field, an illustrative 75% LTV soft-cap on loan amount and a 1–5 year tenure range suited to short gold products.

EMI means equated monthly instalment: one payment each month that covers interest on what you still owe plus a slice of principal. Under a fixed-rate sketch the rupee amount stays flat for the tenure you enter.

Gold value, appraisal and illustrative 75% LTV
Gold value here is the jewellery value you expect after appraisal. Loan-to-value (LTV) is how much of that value the lender may fund. This tool soft-caps principal at 75% of gold value so you can see a common upper sketch before you visit a branch.
Examples of the soft-cap: ₹3 lakh gold → max ₹2.25 lakh; ₹5 lakh → ₹3.75 lakh; ₹10 lakh → ₹7.5 lakh; ₹2 lakh → ₹1.5 lakh. Real LTV varies by purity, lender policy and product. Convert: illustrative max loan = ₹3,00,000 × 75% = ₹2,25,000 (principal ₹2L sits inside the soft-cap). Monthly rate r = 0.01; n = 24.

Takeaway: Interest is about 13% of principal over two years at 12% p.a. You keep the jewellery pledged while you repay, but the instalment and total cost still matter like any term loan.

Why EMI falls when tenure rises: the same principal is spread over more months. Interest still accrues every month on the outstanding balance, so a longer clock raises total interest.
Decision angle: 1 year costs about ₹8,355 more per month than 2 years, yet saves roughly ₹12,716 in interest. Stones are usually excluded from LTV weight
Most lenders value the gold metal after removing or ignoring diamond and stone weight. A heavy studded piece can appraise far below what you paid at the jeweller.
Enter a gold value that reflects net metal the branch is likely to fund, not the full purchase invoice. If stones make up much of the piece, expect a lower LTV base before the 75% soft-cap even applies.
Short tenure (1–5 years) on this page
Gold loan offers in India are commonly short. This tool caps tenure at 5 years. Within that band, holding rate and amount fixed:
- Shorter tenure → higher EMI, lower total interest, faster release of pledged jewellery.
- Longer tenure (toward 5 years) → lower EMI, higher total interest, longer pledge and monthly obligation.

Pledge without selling and margin-call risk
A gold loan lets you raise cash while the jewellery stays pledged instead of sold. That helps when you need liquidity and want the ornaments back after repayment.
If gold prices fall, outstanding loan can look high relative to current collateral value. Some lenders then ask for a cash top-up, extra gold or faster repayment (often called a margin call). Treat high LTV sketches as less resilient to price drops. Read the agreement for how your lender handles shortfalls.

If EMIs stop and the account stays overdue past the lender’s process, pledged gold can eventually be sold under the agreement to recover dues. That is a standard secured-loan path, not a special scare tactic, and timelines differ by lender and product.

Eligibility vs affordability for gold-backed EMI
Eligibility for a gold loan often hinges on jewellery quality, weight, purity and LTV rules more than on a long income form. Affordability still asks what your monthly budget can carry after essentials, existing EMIs and a buffer for income dips or a margin call.
They diverge when a high LTV ticket “fits” the gold but the EMI crowds out savings. When a lower EMI is not better
A lower EMI usually means you stretched tenure or cut principal, not that the gold loan got cheaper. On the ₹2 lakh · 12% sketch above, about ₹4,449 for 5 years costs far more interest than about ₹9,415 for 2 years.

Tips before you pledge
Try a slightly shorter tenure and note interest saved against the EMI rise. Keep LTV below the soft-cap when you can, so a small price move is less likely to force a top-up.
